Under limited supervision, plans, coordinates, directs, and supervises the work of large and small crews of skilled and semi-skilled workers engaged in a variety of construction, maintenance and repair tasks to the electrical distribution system; performs related duties as required.
This class is characterized by its responsibility for supervision of electrical maintenance crews and the incumbent exercises daily supervision over assigned personnel and coordinates the work of multiple crews.

Plans, coordinates, supervises, and inspects the work of those engaged in the repair, construction and maintenance of overhead electrical systems and equipment, placing and removing crossarms, stringing wires, tapping wires, repairing crossarms and wires, installing and replacing insulators and setting transformers.
Schedules and supervises the work of line and service crews engaged in the construction, setting, maintenance, and repair of vaults and pads, splicing, terminating and pulling cables; installing duct, conduits and risers; installing and setting transformers and switching equipment; installing and repairing of single polyphase meters and related equipment.
Supervises the installation, maintenance and repair of substation equipment; operating such equipment and doing in-field switching during normal work hours as well as in emergency situations.
Evaluates service needs and work methods; establishes and enforces operating and safety procedures.
Estimates time and material for work orders; requisitions required supplies and equipment; evaluates and institutes changes in work methods and priorities; assists in developing the division budget and monitors expenditures.
Maintains records and writes a variety of reports and memos on work performed, materials and equipment utilization, and vandalism.
Assists in the selection of division employees; plans, organizes, and assigns work; conducts or directs staff training and development; reviews and evaluates employee performance; recommends disciplinary action.
Coordinates work with other divisions, departments and sections; patrols lines throughout the City, observing and reporting unsafe conditions.

Education and/or Experience Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include graduation from high school or equivalent and four years of journey level experience in construction, maintenance and repair of both underground or overhead electrical systems including two years in a supervisory capacity. Knowledge and Skill Levels Considerable knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in electrical underground or overhead construction, maintenance and repair work; principles of electric theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems; occupational hazards and standard safety precautions; principles and practices of supervision, training and evaluation of performance. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; prepare reports and keep accurate records; analyze data and information and draw logical conclusions; select, train, supervise and evaluate employees; train personnel on unit activities, procedures and regulations; make decisions regarding operational and personnel functions; operate programs within allocated amounts; respond to emergency and problem situations in an effective manner; communicate effectively with a variety of personnel and establish/maintain effective working relationships; explain and apply policies and procedures; interpret and apply rules, regulations, legislation and policies; understand and follow verbal and written directions; use and care of a variety of tools, materials, and equipment common to the repair and maintenance of electric distribution systems; plan, assign and inspect the work of subordinates; allocate equipment, materials, and personnel appropriately; read and interpret blueprints and building plans; prepare estimates for time, materials and equipment for work orders.
Special Requirements Possession of or ability to obtain during probationary period, a Class A California driver's license with Air Brakes Endorsement and a satisfactory driving record.
